Valerie Merritt is a New Jersey native currently residing in the city of Irvington, New Jersey. Valerie received her early education in the Newark Public Schools, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Master of Science Degree in Organizational Management, both from Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey.
Following her interests in education, communications, public relations, and community outreach, Valerie went on to a distinguished 20 year career with NJ TRANSIT and the Newark Public Schools respectively. She highlight’s one of her career accomplishments as having the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with diverse audiences, which has helped her succeed throughout her career.
During her tenure at the Newark Public Schools, Valerie served on the Superintendent’s executive staff, and was instrumental in the district’s efforts to build public confidence, communicate and promote educational reforms, policies, and initiatives, all to support local schools, district offices, and the Newark community at large. Since leaving the District in 2014, Valerie is currently heading up her own consulting office in public relations, media and communications to support and build the brands of non-profits.
Valerie is a graduate of Leadership Newark (LN ’08), a two-year public policy fellowship program that selects emerging leaders and professionals committed to the improvement of the greater Newark community.
Valerie believes that if you work hard, you should give yourself permission to play even harder; and with hard work and a deep commitment to leave your community better than you found it, great things can happen.
Valerie enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends whenever possible.
